Do you have an overweight dog? When us humans get overweight we know there are 2 main causes. Diet, what we eat, and Exercise, or lack there of it.
When your dog starts packing on the kilos you really need to take a good hard look at yourself. How did this happen? The dog doesn’t know any better. They will eat the food you provide them and go for walks when you say so.
First things first. If your dog is getting overweight ensure you are feeding them the right foods for their age, breed and health condition. Also ensure they are getting adequate exercise to burn off the extra kilos they have been putting on.
Of course the other benefit of taking your dog for a walk more often is that you can add your own exercise into your routine.

The question that may be on your mind right now is – “Do I have to spend a lot of my time walking my dog?”. The good news is no, not really. The important part of regular dog walks is the term “regular”. Consistency is key.
Just 20 mins a day for 5 days a week is better than nothing, and it provides consistency. Depending on what exercise your dog is currently, this may be too much. But the key when it comes to walking your dog is frequency and consistency.
Try creating a schedule and stick to it. Of course, you have to put into consideration the breed, age, and size of your dog so that you can easily determine how long your walks are going should be.
If you walk your dog twice daily (morning and evening) your dog may burn their excess weight quicker. It is very easy for dogs to form a habit. So if you walk your dog in the mornings, it will come to you every morning for that walk. Walking will become a very important part of its life.
If you want to spice things up for your dog and in order for it to burn more calories, you can try jogging or brisk walking for a change. Of course, your dog might not be used to it at first but they will come to love it with time.
Remember if your dog is really not well, you should visit your local vet.
Try not to let excuses stop you from walking your dog. Anytime you have an appointment that is going to prevent you from taking your dog out for a walk, you can tell a trusted friend or a neighbor to take it for a walk for you. Doing this, will keep your dog healthy and strong.
